Celebrate National Poetry Month
April 1st, 2019
April is National Poetry Month, which was inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world with schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets celebrating poetry’s vital place in our culture. The Library is celebrating National Poetry Month with the following programs:
Poetry Buffet - Local poets will read from their own work.
Saturday, April 6 from 2pm - 3pm
In the Garden Writers' Workshop - A workshop for writers of all levels of experience and all genres.
Saturday, April 13 from 2pm - 3:45pm
Spring Into Poetry - Local poets Ingrid Green, Russell MacClaren, Phyllis Parun, and Valentine Pierce will read their work.
Algiers Regional Library
Wednesday, April 17 from 6pm - 7:45pm
Teen Black-Out Poetry - Teens are invited to create poems out of words cut out of old books and magazines.
Nora Navra Library
Thursday, April 18 from 4:30pm - 6pm
Poetry on Tap - Adults age 21 and over are invited to share their poetry and a drink.
Crown and Anchor English Pub (200 Pelican Ave.)
Tuesday, April 23 from 6:30pm - 8pm
Teen Poetry Day - Teens and tweens, ages 10 - 17, will create poetry using magnetic poetry sets and black-out poetry words.

Wednesday, April 24 from 4pm - 5pm
Pizza Poetry Day – 826 New Orleans publishes the poem of New Orleans’ writers ages 6-18 on pizza boxes for delivery and pick up on Pizza Poetry Day. 826 New Orleans held youth poetry workshops at multiple Library locations throughout March.
